Breast augmentation surgery, sometimes referred to as a "breast aug" or "boob job" by patients, involves using breast implants or fat grafting to enhance the breasts. While it is widely known for increasing breast size, this procedure goes beyond simply adding volume. The surgical plan is thoroughly customised to fit each patient’s anatomy and aesthetic preferences.
When performing breast augmentation for Asian patients, our specialist plastic surgeons pay careful attention to considerations such as tissue characteristics, frame size and cultural factors that uniquely affect Asian women.

What Is Unique About Asian Breast Augmentation?
Through their extensive experience working with Asian patients, our surgeons have identified characteristics that this population often shares. Looking at the anatomical factors, many Asian patients have:
- Denser breast tissue
- Tighter, thicker skin
- A smaller breast footprint (base width)
- Differences in chest wall shape and rib cage dimensions
- A more petite figure overall
- A higher propensity for keloid and hypertrophic scarring
Our surgeons design their surgical plans with these factors in mind. The breast augmentation procedure is customised through:
- Selection of implant size and profile to suit Asian body proportions
- Pocket creation that accounts for Asian tissue qualities
- Incision placement that considers Asian skin healing characteristics
- Scar minimisation and management techniques
This approach helps produce a balanced outcome that complements rather than overwhelms the patient's figure.
Cosmetic Benefits of Asian Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery can offer numerous cosmetic benefits for Asian patients, including:
Larger Breast Size
The primary purpose of breast augmentation is to increase breast size. This is accomplished by inserting a saline or silicone implant into a pocket created above or below the chest muscle, or by removing fat from another area of the body and transferring it into the breasts.
Increased Projection
The profile of a breast implant, or its degree of curvature, can affect how much the breast projects forward from the chest wall. A higher-profile implant can create a more pronounced and forward-projecting breast. Round implants can also create more upper pole fullness, or cleavage.
Improved Symmetry
Strategic placement of implants or transferred fat can help balance the overall appearance of the breasts. If there is a significant size difference between the left and right breast, the surgeon can select implants of different sizes to improve symmetry.
Breast Volume Restoration
A decrease in breast volume is common following pregnancy, nursing or significant weight loss. If these changes bother you, breast augmentation can replace the lost volume to create a fuller appearance and firmer feel.
Rebalanced Body Proportions
Increasing breast size can rebalance overall body proportions, especially in relation to the hips and waist. Asian breast augmentation is performed with an eye to maintaining harmony with your natural frame, which is often smaller for Asian women.
Rebalanced Breast Aesthetics
Many Asian women have a disproportionately large areola compared to the size of their breast mound. During surgery, a surgeon can address this through the choice of implant size and/or areola reduction techniques.
Functional Benefits of Asian Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation is primarily performed for cosmetic purposes, and therefore has no functional benefits. However, it can serve an important reconstructive role for some patients, particularly those who have undergone mastectomy as part of cancer treatment.
Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction can help restore breast volume and shape, contributing to a sense of wholeness for patients who have had some or all of their breast tissue removed. When performed as part of a reconstructive plan, breast augmentation may be eligible for Medicare and private health insurance benefits, subject to meeting specific criteria and individual policy coverage.
What Does Breast Augmentation Not Do?
The primary outcome of breast augmentation is fuller breasts. For some patients, placing an implant can create the appearance of a more lifted breast, but this result is more illusion than reality. Implants do not lift the breast tissue and are not placed higher than where your breasts naturally sit on your chest.
If you are experiencing ptosis (the technical name for sagging or drooping) and wish to elevate your breasts, a breast lift may be a more suitable procedure. Breast lifting (mastopexy) involves removing excess skin and repositioning the underlying tissue to create a more lifted appearance and firmer feel.
Some patients seek more volume as well as more lift. A breast lift can often be done at the same time as an augmentation. If you have varied goals, your specialist plastic surgeon will assist you in evaluating your options.
Choosing Breast Implants vs. Breast Fat Transfer
Breast fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, uses the patient’s own fat cells to increase breast volume. This approach can be appealing to patients who prefer to use natural materials rather than implants. Fat transfer typically looks and feels similar to a natural breast, with the added benefits of body contouring in the donor areas and no linear scars on the breasts.
However, fat transfer has limitations. The amount of enhancement possible is restricted by the amount of available donor fat, which can be a limiting factor for some Asian patients with naturally lean body types.
Implants offer long-lasting and predictable results, with the ability to achieve significant size increases if desired. Some Asian patients may have concerns about scarring, given the higher tendency for keloid formation in Asian skin.
Both options can work beautifully for Asian patients. The choice between them depends on factors such as:
- Desired size increase
- Natural body composition
- Tissue characteristics
- Personal preferences regarding surgery and recovery
- Long-term maintenance considerations
- Individual aesthetic goals
During your consultation, your specialist plastic surgeon will help you evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of each approach so you can choose your preferred option.
