According to an article published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, "the earliest medical physician trained in Western medicine was brought by Sir Stamford Raffles to Singapore for the care of the troops" in the 1800s. Expat surgeons recruited from the United Kingdom took leading roles, while Singaporean physicians who trained locally were limited to assistant positions.

Opportunities for Singaporean physicians expanded in the post-World War II era. Before this period, a physician interested in pursuing postgraduate surgical training had to travel to the UK to continue their studies. However, following the war, the colonial administration introduced a plan for sending a limited number of physicians on scholarship to the UK to further their training. This arrangement continued until 1960.

Australia also contributed to the education of Singaporean surgeons. In the 1950s, the Royal Australian College of Surgeons began conducting postgraduate courses in Singapore, and a select group of physicians were sent to Australia for further training.

The specialty of plastic surgery, in particular, was heavily influenced by WWII. Singapore's plastic surgeons initially focused on reconstructive procedures for patients who sustained injuries in the conflict, as well as patients with congenital abnormalities and accident-related traumas. 

The 1960s saw the founding of the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons, which played a major role in standardising practices and promoting education in the specialty. This period also witnessed an influx of foreign-trained plastic surgeons returning to Singapore, bringing the latest techniques and knowledge from Western institutions.
