The skin and muscles of your forehead lose elasticity and tone over time. This process can cause your eyebrows to drop from their original position, sometimes unevenly. Heavy, low-set brows can change your resting expression and might even affect your field of vision.
A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic procedure that raises the position of the eyebrows and tightens the skin on the forehead. What Types of Brow Lift Are Recommended for Asian Patients?
Dr Choy favours the following three approaches for Asian brow lift surgery:
Temporal Brow Lift
The temporal brow lift is Dr Choy's preferred method for Asian patients. This technique involves making two discreet incisions within the hairline at the temples, allowing for a subtle lift of the outer third of the eyebrows. The aging process often affects this portion of the brow more than the inner or central areas.
A temporal brow lift is less invasive than a classic brow lift, and the incisions are well-hidden in the hair. While the temporal brow lift may not be as dramatic as other techniques, it offers a noticeable result with minimal scarring, which often appeals to our more scar-averse clientele.
Direct Brow Lift
The direct brow lift is a powerful technique that can achieve a more significant lift than the temporal approach. It involves making incisions directly above (suprabrow lift) or below (subbrow lift) the eyebrows. Through these incisions, Dr Choy can perform an internal browpexy to secure the brow position. Because these approaches result in more conspicuous scarring, Dr Choy usually does not recommend them for Asian patients.
However, there are some instances in which a direct brow lift may be suitable, such as for men with bushy eyebrows or deep forehead creases that can help conceal the scars. Additionally, the direct brow lift can be beneficial for patients with ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelids) who compensate for their heavy upper eyelid skin by constantly lifting their brows.
Trichophytic Brow Lift
The trichophytic brow lift, also known as the hairline brow lift, involves making an incision along the frontal hairline. This approach provides extensive access to the underlying muscles and tissues, allowing Dr Choy to address frown lines by relaxing the corrugator muscle. In some cases, the trichophytic brow lift can also be used to adjust the configuration of the hairline.
Cosmetic Benefits of Brow Lift Surgery for Asian Patients
Brow lift surgery can offer numerous cosmetic benefits for Asian patients, including:
Elevating Sinking or Heavy Brows
The frontalis muscle responsible for lifting our eyebrows weakens as we age, allowing our brows to droop. This can lead to a flattening of our eyebrows' arches and subtly change our default facial expression. Brow lift surgery elevates the tissues of the upper face to address these concerns.
Smoothing Forehead Wrinkles
Horizontal forehead wrinkles often accompany descending brows and can become quite deep with time. Brow lift surgery not only raises the brows but also smooths out these creases, creating a longer-lasting result than can be achieved with nonsurgical wrinkle treatments.
Enhancing Facial Symmetry
Eyebrows play a significant role in framing our face. Often, one brow sits lower than the other, and the difference can become more pronounced with ageing. Brow lift surgery can improve symmetry between the eyebrows and create a more balanced overall facial aesthetic.
Reducing Heavy Upper Eyelid Skin
In some cases, brow descent can contribute to excess skin on the upper eyelids, making them look heavy and hooded. Lifting the brows can help redistribute the skin more evenly across the forehead and upper eyelids.
Functional Benefits of Asian Brow Lift Surgery
In addition to its cosmetic advantages, brow lift surgery can also provide functional benefits for some patients:
Improving Vision
If severely drooping brows cause heavy skin to rest on the upper eyelids, the visual field can be obstructed, making it difficult to see properly. By raising the brows, brow lift surgery can alleviate the pressure on the upper eyelids and help improve vision.
Reducing Eye Strain and Forehead Discomfort
When brows drop significantly from their original position, some people compensate by constantly lifting their brows and engaging their forehead muscles. This unconscious action can lead to eye strain, headaches and discomfort. Brow lift surgery can help alleviate these symptoms.
Brow Lift Surgery vs. Nonsurgical Brow Lift Treatments
Nonsurgical cosmetic treatments are popular worldwide, and we have found that they are especially popular with Asian patients who often prefer less invasive options. Beauty treatments like microblading and nonsurgical procedures like thread lifting, Ultherapy and Thermage are appealing alternatives to brow lifting for some people.
There are advantages to nonsurgical treatments for Asian patients, such as reduced downtime, minimal scarring and the ability to achieve subtle results. However, you must also consider that they yield temporary results and may not address more significant brow drooping. Brow lift surgery, though it is not right for everyone, offers longer-lasting results and can achieve a more noticeable lift.
During your consultation with Dr Ellis Choy, he will assess your individual needs and goals to determine whether brow lift surgery or a nonsurgical approach is suitable for you.
